Welcome to Eye Care Optometrists in Hillarys, Perth. Established in 2006, our practice is family owned and operated and has been providing quality vision care to the West Australian community ever since.
Regular eye examinations are important for early detection of sight threatening conditions. We provide individualised care to all ages and spend time to perform a thorough examination using state our of the art equipment.
During your comprehensive eye examination our experienced Optometrists will assess your visual system as a whole to determine the best way to optimise and maintain your visual health.

Barry van der Vyver
Dip.Optom. (SA).
Barry immigrated with his family to Perth in 2002 and worked as consultant Optometrist at the Lions Eye Institute for 4 years before starting Eyecare Optometrists in Hillary’s during early 2006. Barry trained as Optometrist in Johannesburg, South Africa (Witwatersrand University of Technology). He completed post graduate qualifications in Advanced Diagnosis and Management of Ocular Disease (New England College of Optometry Boston U.S.A) and Ocular Therapeutics (Australian College of Optometry).
Kathryn
Eyewear Consultant
Kathryn, another of our eyewear consultants has over 12 years of experience in the optical industry. She loves getting to know all the patients and spending time to help them choose the perfect frame and lens package. Being a glasses wearer herself, Kathryn enjoys keeping up to date with the latest eyewear trends and fashion. One of her favourite things about working in this industry is the reaction of patients when they see how much their new lenses have improved their vision and also helping people of all ages start using contact lenses. Kathryn was born and grew up in Perth and when she isn’t at work she enjoys spending time with her family, bike riding, going to the beach and camping.
Jo
B.Optom (UJ)
Jo grew up in Zimbabwe and in 2000 she completed her Bachelor of Optometry at Rand Afrikaans University. She practiced optometry in Johannesburg before moving to Perth in 2007. Since moving to Perth Jo completed the OCANZ exam and has been working at the Lions Eye Institute as a clinical optometrist in the cataract and refractive suite ever since. In 2010 she joined Barry at Eyecare Optometrist working part-time. She is a therapeutically endorsed Optometrist, having completed the Ocular Therapeutics Program. Jo is a great communicator that loves looking after her patients and their needs.
Dorette
Practice Manager
Dorette has been working with Barry since he opened his first practice in South Africa ,working behind the scenes and sometimes not so behind the scenes. She is our practice manager and keeps things running smoothly.
