OUR EYE EXAMINATIONS

Our extensive eye examinations are as individual as your eyes.

Eye examinations are a vital part of any health care programme and at Eyecare Optometrists we believe that everyone deserves the best possible eye care.

At your first appointment we aim to get a clear understanding of your ocular and general health history, lifestyle and occupational needs. This information will be used, in combination with a detailed ocular examination to determine the best possible outcome for your future ocular health and vision correction needs. Your family history, medications as well as details of your previous prescriptions will be considered.

When certain disease entities are suspected or complicated refractive challenges encountered, further appointments may be scheduled for specialised testing.

What do we test for?

Your comprehensive eye examination of at least 40 minutes duration will include the combination of the latest, state of the art technology in equipment and our expertise.

As standard part of our routine evaluation you will be screened for diseases like macular degeneration, glaucoma, dry eye disease syndrome and diabetic retinopathy, mentioning only a few.

Our comprehensive refraction results will be complimented by customised solutions in lens technologies and eyewear.

We have a keen interest in diagnosis and management of ocular disease, contact lenses and children’s vision.

Dry Eye Management

Understanding Dry Eye Disease (DED).

Dry Eye Disease (DED) is a complex and multifactorial condition that impacts millions worldwide. Characterised by insufficient tear production or excessive tear evaporation, DED results in damage to the ocular surface, leading to a range of uncomfortable and often debilitating symptoms.

Patients with DED may experience intermittent blurring of vision, burning eyes, a sensation of a foreign body in the eye, inflammation, redness, itching, and sensitivity to light. In severe cases, the discomfort and persistent symptoms can contribute to a decline in mental health, leading to depression.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) recognises DED as one of the most underestimated disorders in society, affecting over 740 million people globally.

The prevalence of DED increases in certain demographics, with 1 out of 5 people suffering from the condition. Alarmingly, 22 of the top 100 prescribed systemic drugs are known to cause or exacerbate DED.

The Role of Meibomian Gland Dysfunction in Dry Eye Disease.

Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) is the leading cause of Dry Eye Disease, responsible for over 85% of cases. The Meibomian glands, located in the eyelids, play a crucial role in maintaining the stability of the tear film by producing the oil layer that prevents tears from evaporating too quickly.

When these glands become obstructed or malfunction, the quality and volume of the oil they produce diminish, leading to excessive tear evaporation and the characteristic dryness and instability associated with DED.

A cascade of events occurs as the oil thickens and becomes less fluid, eventually leading to the blockage of the gland orifices by stagnant oils and keratinised tissue. This blockage can cause the buildup of pressure within the glands, ultimately resulting in their atrophy or death.

The primary objectives in managing DED related to MGD are to prevent gland loss and to restore the function of viable glands, ensuring the health and comfort of the ocular surface.
